History of Feng Shui

A systematic approach to Feng Shui began when a scholar named Yang Yun-sung (A.D. 618-907), living in one of the most breathtakingly scenic regions in the world, hypothesized that the environment in which people lived played a major role in shaping their lives.  As the art of Feng Shui developed, a more academic approach was taken utilizing precise mathematic formulas and astronomical equations calculated on a Chinese compass called the luo pan.

The practice of Feng Shui was confined to the ruling class and many of the early records were locked in symbolism and archaic language.  Those who were able to acquire this knowledge enjoyed privileged positions in the court of the emperor.  Their counsel was sought from the planning of a city to choosing the most appropriate mate.

With the advent of the cultural revolution, Feng Shui was banned in China along with Chi Gung and many other important Chinese cultural arts.

Since then, the practice of Feng Shui has enjoyed a major resurgence.  Along with home consultations, practitioners are being called to advise on everything from boosting moral and increasing productivity in the work place, to choosing the right grave site.  Even the Hong Kong branch of the Credit Lyonnais Securities, each year, since 1992, have consulted with Feng Shui experts, on how the stock market would perform.  Here in America, major television shows such as Ophra, KCET and the Tonight Show, have done specials on Feng Shui.

For its sketchy, folkloric beginning, Feng Shui has withstood the test of time.  Having proven it's efficiency, it is spreading, like a brush fire, to every country in the world.

The mythical emperor, Fu Hsi, discovered, the Ba Gua, or Eight Trigrams of the I Ching on the shell of a turtle.  This symbol became the representation of the eight directions in Feng Shui. Although the exact origin of Feng Shui is unknown, it is clear that this practice predates the time of Confucius, Lao-Tsu and the Buddha by many centuries.
